The newsstand project was initiated by the association that represents many newsstand owners and operators. The design was developed through extensive cooperation among city agencies, operators, and stakeholders.

Two prototypes were approved by the Art Commission of Philadelphia and are located at 4th and Chestnut Streets and 12th and Market Streets. Additional versions, modified with a flat roof, have been installed throughout the Center City and West Philadelphia area.
