In
1978 AIA Philadelphia organized an unjudged sketch problem to solicit
ideas for a large block made vacant by the demolition of the Gimbels
department store. Claflen Associates took the opportunity to explore
high density mixed use in a mid-rise setting.
The project proposal intensifies
the link between Market and Chestnut Streets through the renovation
of the block- long post office that already exists to the west of
the Gimbels block. On the block itself a multi-level retail base
linked the subway, entertainment, and parking. This base provided
access to the regular office space above. The scheme's goal of organizing
contemporary functions in a manner supportive of the existing urban
fabric of the city was clearly understood and supported by the reviewer
from the Philadelphia Inquirer. |
